about

In 1994, when I started working in sound and playing in 2 bands in Bogotá, Colombia, we had an event called “Electroacoustic Music Festival” and we were to provide all our gear.

We set up a Mackie board with 8 sub outs and stereo out and 12 loudspeakers around the room, one for each out, for the composers to be able to play the sounds around the whole room, it was an experience both in tech terms and the people who went and performed, including Stephan Roi and Francis Dhomont realizing there was a broken tweeter at the back of the room and the box was aimed outwards!

We were there for 5 days and every morning at 6 AM we go up the hill to the Andes University and get ready for the huge crowd and the composers.

One guy, John, was there for the whole thing, with us, got us coffee and breakfast (In Colombia breakfast is an arepa in a bag), he was wearing a Carriel, a bag that crosses your chest, made of leather and it was funny to see a real tall American wearing it but he loved it. We had so much fun, I was so so at English at the time, but we had great convos with John.

Last day of the fest, full house, and our John turns out to be the headliner, John Chowning, inventor of FM synthesis!! I couldn’t believe it, the show went very well, we said our goodbyes and I will never forget John’s performance, it was like seeing Tony Iommi playing “Planet Caravan” in your living room.

Fast forward to 2022 and I created these tracks as an homage to a mind and a person I will never forget.
